Floristry as a Career

 

Many people of all ages, some coming from other working backgrounds are being retrained and entering the floristry industry. Being a florist can be a very exciting and challenging career. If you are considering a career in floristry, you should:  
 
bullet Enjoy working with flowers.
bullet Be willing to learn all aspects of the floristry profession.
bullet You will need to be able to arrange flowers in an attractive manner.
bullet Be a reasonably quick worker and good team player.
bullet Be a "people's person" as you will be dealing closely with the public, in varied situations.
bullet You should have a genuine liking for people, and have a pleasant and helpful manner.
bullet Remember that flowers touch the emotions of other peoples' lives, and that your job will be to use all of your skills to convey these feelings, through your floral designs, on behalf of your customers.
bullet Aim to provide the best service to your customers in a manner of a varied choice of designs, quality, product knowledge and after-sales support or simple general advice.

A florist has the pleasure of helping a brides to select the right flowers for her wedding day.

bullet

You will share in the joy of creating a beautiful gift arrangement for a new mother and her baby.

bullet

You will show sympathy and understanding when customers ordering funeral tributes are emotionally upset.

But... floristry is not all glamour, there is a lot of hard work, and long hours standing on your feet. Your duties as a florist will include:

bullet Unpacking stock as it comes into the florist shop.
bullet Conditioning flowers.
bullet Watering plants.  
bullet Cleaning vases and buckets.
bullet Pricing stock and display it in an attractive manner.
bullet Serving customers.
bullet Answering the telephone.
bullet Completing orders.
bullet Making up designs for the shop.
bullet Keeping book work up to date.
bullet Changing the shop window display.
bullet Making sure the flower shop is clean and tidy.
bullet Spending a whole day out of the shop to make up designs for a function.
bullet Ordering goods and flowers from wholesalers.
bullet Contacting venues and establishing good working relationships with their managers.
